Biomagnetic measurements utilising a superparamagnetic marker: a feasibility study

Summary A preliminary study is here reported on a new potential marker for biomagnetic measurements. The marker consists of superparamagnetic polymer microspheres which were detected in the presence of external steady magnetic fields by means of an r.f.-SQUID magnetometer. The particles were prepared in samples differing in the concentration value and immersed in a homogeneous magnetic field of variable intensity. A simple model was taken into account for the distribution of the microspheres in the samples, so that the theoretical values were compared to the marker field values measured by the biomagnetic sensor. The overall sensitivity of the experimental apparatus and the minimum concentration value of the marker were then estimated.     

Universal ZN-graded differential calculus

We investigate the propeties of differential algebras generated by an operator d satisfying the property d^N = 0 instead of d² = 0 as in the usual case. Several examples of realizations of such differential algebras are given, either in the context of Z_N-graded N × N matrix algebras, or as a generalized differential calculus on manifolds.     

<Emphasis Type="Italic">q</Emphasis>-Schur Subalgebras

In Fayers and Martin [J. Algebra 240 (2001), 859–873], the author and Martin constructed embeddings of Schur algebras S(2,r)↪S(2,R). Here, we generalise to the q-Schur algebras S_q(2,r). Presented by A. Verschoren Mathematics Subject Classifications (2000) 20G05, 20C33.     

Illuminating Molecular Processes in Living Cells

Lately, scientists have explored approaches to developing fluorescent and/or bioluminescent indicators to pinpoint cellular processes in single living cells. These analytical methods have become a key technology for visualizing and detecting what was otherwise unseen in live cells. The target signaling included second messengers, protein phosphorylations, protein–protein interactions, and protein localizations.     

States and Structure of von Neumann Algebras

We summarize and deepen recent results on the interplay between properties of states and the structure of von Neumann algebras. We treat Jauch–Piron states and the concept of independence in noncommutative probability theory.     

R-Matrices for Leibniz Algebras

Leibniz agebras are a generalization of Lie algebras, where no symmetry properties of the bracket are required. In this Letter we introduce a notion of R-matrices for this structure and the related Yang–Baxter equations, and discuss some of their basic properties.     

Bohr's inequality for uniform algebras

We prove a uniform algebra analogue of a classical inequality of Bohr's concerning Fourier coefficients of bounded holomorphic functions. The classical inequality follows trivially.

     

Complex genetic evolution of artificial self‐replicators in cellular automata

It is widely believed that evolutionary dynamics of artificial self‐replicators realized in cellular automata (CA) are limited in diversity and adaptation. Contrary to this view, we show that complex genetic evolution may occur within simple CA. The evolving self‐replicating loops (“evoloops”) we investigate exhibit significant diversity in macro‐scale morphologies and mutational biases, undergoing nontrivial genetic adaptation by maximizing colony density and enhancing sustainability against other species. Nonmutable subsequences enable genetic operations that alter fitness differentials and promote long‐term evolutionary exploration. These results demonstrate a unique example of genetic evolution hierarchically emerging from local interactions between elements much smaller than individual replicators. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Finite-Dimensional Simple Leibniz Pairs and Simple Poisson Modules

Simple modules over the Leibniz pairs are studied. Simple Poisson modules over Poisson algebras of the semisimple associative algebra structure are determined and they are nothing but simple bimodules over simple associative algebras with standard noncommutative Poisson algebra structure.
